Chapter 11

Deanna followed Eric into the school office, where she saw Michelle gathering her belongings, clearly ready to leave for the day. Her eyes volleyed from Deanna to Eric, and Deanna would bet her last dollar that a look of unease passed over Michelle’s face.

“Hey, Michelle,” Deanna said, offering her a smile.

“Hi.” Unlike the first time they’d met, Michelle’s smile seemed forced. The only thing that had changed between then and now was that she was certain Michelle suspected there was more going on between her and Eric than merely a friendship. Which only confirmed Deanna’s suspicion that the secretary had a major crush on the principal.

“See you tomorrow, Eric,” Michelle said, her tone and smile brighter now that she was speaking to him.

Whatever, Deanna thought.

“Evening, Michelle,” Eric told her. Then he opened the door to his office and gestured for Deanna to enter.

Once she stepped inside, Eric closed the door. A beat passed before he leveled a confused look on her.

Deanna spoke before he could. “How’s Risha?”

She saw something pass in Eric’s eyes, almost a hint of humor. He knew she had brought up Risha as a way to delay the real conversation he wanted to have with her.

But he replied nonetheless. “She’s tough. A strong kid. So overall, she’s doing well. She’s here and she’s smiling, but I know that emotionally she’s in a tough place.”

“You said that the police tracked down her father.” Eric had told her that at the wedding. “Is he still in jail?”

Eric shook his head. “Unfortunately not. He’s been released on bail, with strict instructions to stay away from his wife and daughter. But unfortunately that doesn’t mean a thing.”

“Ain’t that the truth.”

“So far, there haven’t been any problems. Hopefully it stays that way.” In an instant, Eric’s expression changed. His eyes narrowed on Deanna. “Enough about Risha. What’s going on with you?”

“Nothing.”

A slight frown marred his face. “You’re going to pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about?”

Another beat passed, then Deanna released a harried breath. “I know…you’re upset that I didn’t return your calls. It’s not that I’m ignoring you. I’ve just been…preoccupied.” She knew that her words sounded lame, but they were true. She had been making more calls in an attempt to locate her mother. “Sorry.”

“Sorry?”

“That’s all I can say.”

Eric pursed his lips as he eyed her. Then he said in a low voice, “One minute we’re rocking each other’s worlds. The next, I’m not hearing from you.”

It didn’t make sense, but Deanna had been racked with confusing feelings after leaving Eric’s bed. Their connection had been easy, and she should be feeling elated. But on the contrary, she was more uneasy than ever.

“So tell me the truth,” Eric said. “Why didn’t you return my calls?”

Because I’m afraid of getting hurt, was the thought that popped into Deanna’s mind. But she said, “I already told you.”

One of Eric’s eyebrows shot up, the look on his face one of pure skepticism. Then he took a few steps forward, leaned in close and said, “I don’t believe you.
